Creating St. Swift Consulting – Inspiration from the Sky

Each spring, as our narrow boat, Swallow, moves quietly along the canals, we look forward to its namesake returning. Swallows are remarkable to watch, playful and acrobatic as they skim the water to catch insects. In Portugal, families welcome spring by hanging ceramic swallows on their walls, symbols of love, loyalty and safe return. I have always been drawn to that connection. It speaks to renewal, belonging and the constants that steady us. A Journey That Changed Everything We first fell in love with narrow boating during Covid and promised ourselves that once restrictions lifted, we would build a boat of our own. What followed was an eighteen‑month labour of love filled with a steep learning curve, laughter and persistence. It became an adventure that gave us lasting memories and a sense of achievement we will never forget. Narrow boating taught us the value of slowing down and offered the freedom and tranquillity of the waterways. It also gave me time to reflect on the next stage of my career. My passion has always been supporting businesses and individuals through transformational change. Building a business to harness my decades of experience felt like the natural next step, long overdue but finally clear. Why the Swift? When it came to naming my business, I looked to the swallow’s close relative, the swift. The swift spends almost its entire life in flight, eating and sleeping on the wing. It is among the fastest birds in level flight and travels thousands of miles each year with remarkable endurance. Swifts rarely fly alone. They move in tight, fast‑moving groups, filling the sky with their distinctive calls. The swift captures qualities I admire and those that SMEs and scale-ups need to thrive: speed with purpose, resilience through challenge and strength in community. The Learning What inspires me most about both swifts and swallows is that such small birds brave immense journeys. Each spring they return from Africa, crossing deserts and seas, flying thousands of miles through turbulence and storms. They draw on different strengths to survive and thrive. The swift is tireless and fast, a symbol of endurance and collective energy. The swallow is slower, more graceful and faithful to the same nest year after year. Its strength lies in commitment and loyalty, a reminder of the importance of constancy and belonging. For me, these birds offer a powerful metaphor for leadership. True leadership requires both the drive of the swift and the commitment and loyalty of the swallow. I help SME leaders weave these qualities into their organisations, creating teams that thrive with purpose and belonging. A Closing Thought If you would like to explore how these ideas can shape your own leadership journey, Let’s Start with a Conversation.
