If delegation is so essential to leadership, why does it feel so hard to do?
In SMEs especially, a lack of delegation is one of the biggest bottlenecks I see. Leaders find themselves absorbed in the doing rather than the leading. Teams feel under‑used or not trusted. The business slows down without anyone intending it to. Most leaders know they should delegate more. The reasons they don’t are natural: • “It’s quicker if I do it myself.” • “I don’t have time to explain it.” • “What if it goes wrong.” • “Will it be done to the standard I need.” Habit. Comfort. A sense of control. Perfectionism. It’s rarely about competence. It’s about mindset. Delegation isn’t abdication. It’s not “off you go, good luck.”It’s clarity, trust and support. It’s giving people enough direction to succeed, enough autonomy to grow, and enough safety to ask for help. A small shift in mindset changes everything. When leaders see delegation as a strategic act rather than abdication or a loss of control, things start to open up: • They free themselves to operate at the right altitude • Their people grow faster • Trust deepens • Capacity expands • The business moves Delegation isn’t about stepping back. It’s about stepping into the kind of leadership that lifts everyone. When leaders make that shift, the whole business feels it. If this resonates with you as a leader, I’m always happy to talk.
